Phase
One: Vision Development
A vision when written provides powerful direction for your
organization. It fosters:
Unity
• Energy • Purpose & Risk Taking • Enhanced
Leadership
Excellence & Overcoming Failure
“Vision
Planning” begins with documentation of the vision. This guided
process begins with the “Visionary Leader” following
these steps.
Vision Development Instructions:
- Pick a point in
time in the future. Usually within 5 years. Name it.
- Get to a quiet
place and try to visualize what the organization looks like
at that point in time.
- Ask yourself: who,
what, where, when, why, how? Try to sense it – what can
you smell, taste, touch, see & hear? Imagine the
buildings, the people, the equipment, the successes, the failures,
the sense of accomplishment, the lessons learned.
- Avoid any limiting
thoughts, such as “that will cost too much”, “There
is no way we can move that fast”, or “people
will think I’m crazy if I say we can do that”.
- Assume that you
have been successful in applying your values, principles and
philosophy consistently.
- Write every snapshot
down on an index card. One thought, idea or snapshot
per card please.
- Keep the deck
of cards with you for an extended time. Each time you
have a thought, write it on an index card. One per card, please.
- Do not go back
and review the cards. Once you write on it, put it to
the back of the pile and move on.
- Repeated thoughts
are all right.
- Once all thoughts
are down, a storyboard is created. This will organize the
thoughts and we can create an appropriate format in which
to present the vision. Maybe a letter to a friend, a
report to a board, an interview on tape.
- You will then
go off and document the vision.
- This vision will
become the basis for subsequent planning. You will be amazed
at how energizing this document is for yourself and your organization.
